January Postcards: the Below Zero League
January 2026 was the first month with collectible postcards in Mooot. The collection was named the Below Zero League, a tribute to the frozen days of January and the wildlife that endures the cold in the Pyrenees. Twelve illustrated postcards in total, each with its own story.
In this article we look back at all the January postcards, the inspiration behind each one, and some curiosities from the development process.
The theme: Pyrenean wildlife in winter
The theme for each monthly league is decided before creating the illustrations. For January, the idea was clear: the animals and landscapes that survive winter in the Pyrenees. Chamois, bears, bearded vultures, owls... creatures that many know by name but rarely see up close.
The chamois is the symbol of the Pyrenees. Agile and resilient, it lives in the rocky high-altitude zones and endures below-zero temperatures without flinching. It is the animal that best represents the January collection.
It was one of the first postcards designed and served as the visual reference that defined the style of the entire collection.
The bearded vulture is one of the largest birds in Europe, with a wingspan of up to 2.8 metres. It was extinct in the Pyrenees for decades and was successfully reintroduced in the 1990s. It feeds mainly on bones, which it breaks by dropping them from great heights onto rocks.
The Pyrenean brown bear was on the brink of extinction at the end of the 20th century. Thanks to reintroduction programmes, today there is a small population living mainly in the high Pyrenean valleys. In winter, bears enter torpor and don't leave their dens until spring.
The common owl is one of the most widespread nocturnal raptors in the region. Unlike many birds, it doesn't migrate in winter and endures the cold thanks to its thick plumage. Its night vision and silent hunting make it an exceptionally efficient predator.
The squirrel is the character who runs Mooot's black market. It started as a secondary character in the game mechanics and ended up getting its own postcard. It carries exactly 8 acorns — the price at which this postcard can be bought on the market.
The wild Pyrenean goat lives on cliffs and rocky terrain. In winter it descends slightly in altitude but never abandons the mountain. Its ability to balance on near-vertical ground is remarkable.
The Pyrenean Mastiff is an ancient native breed used for centuries to guard herds from wolves and bears. Large, shaggy, and brave, it is one of the oldest livestock guardian dogs in Europe. It withstands Pyrenean winters without shelter thanks to its double coat.
The only animal in the collection that appears in plural. Wild rabbits live in groups and shelter in their burrows during the coldest months. They are one of the most important prey animals for Pyrenean predators such as the Iberian lynx and the bearded vulture.
The only place (not an animal) in the collection. The sanctuary and valley of Núria is one of the most iconic spots in the Pyrenees. In winter, snow covers everything and it can only be reached by rack railway. The image of the sanctuary against the snowy mountain is unmistakable.
Including Núria was a debate: the collection was about animals, but leaving out one of the most recognisable winter landscapes in the region would have been a mistake. The landscape won.
This one came out too beautiful to leave out, even though there was already a bear in another postcard. It's Saroa's favourite.
The den is the shelter of many animals during winter. Badgers, foxes, bears... many animals spend the coldest months in their dens, in torpor or simply sheltered from the cold. The postcard shows a snow-covered den, the warmth inside contrasting with the frost outside.
This postcard is not part of the regular game drops. It was designed to be given to players who helped find bugs and improve Mooot. Very few players have it, and it cannot be bought.
How do you get postcards?
By playing every day, completing challenges, and opening mystery boxes. If you have duplicate postcards, you can exchange them for acorns and use them at the black market to buy the ones you're missing. Postcards from previous collections are also available on the market.
